Ultra Rare (UR) - Pokémon TCG Rarity

Ultra Rare (UR)

Definition

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), the Ultra Rare (UR) designation is assigned to premium, fully-illustrated versions of cards that offer a significant visual upgrade over their standard counterparts. In the current Scarlet & Violet era, this rarity is indicated by two silver stars at the bottom of the card. Ultra Rares are distinct in that the artwork extends across the entire surface of the card, completely removing the traditional artwork border.

Ultra Rares predominantly feature "Full Art" versions of Pokémon ex and highly sought-after Supporter cards. For Pokémon, the standard Double Rare (RR) artwork is replaced with a dynamic, larger-than-life illustration that spans from edge to edge, often featuring detailed textures that can be felt by running a finger across the surface. For Supporter cards, Ultra Rares provide Full Art depictions of popular characters, gym leaders, and rivals from the video game series. Functionally, an Ultra Rare card plays exactly the same as its lower-rarity counterpart; it has the same HP, attacks, and abilities. The upgrade is purely cosmetic, allowing players to customize and "bling out" their decks with more luxurious versions of the cards they need to play.

Market Context

The market dynamics for Ultra Rare cards are driven by a combination of competitive playability and character popularity, famously known within the community as the "Waifu Tax" or "Character Tax."

When an Ultra Rare features a highly playable Supporter card or a Meta-defining Pokémon ex, its value will be significantly higher than the standard rarity version, as competitive players often prefer to use premium versions of their best cards. However, the true price ceiling for Ultra Rares is often dictated by collectors. Full Art Supporter cards featuring popular female characters from the franchise frequently command massive premiums on the secondary market, regardless of whether the card is actually useful in the game. On marketplaces like Ntar, Ultra Rares are a staple of high-end trading and selling. They are frequently encapsulated in "Slabs" by grading companies like PSA or CGC, which can exponentially increase their value if they achieve a perfect grade of 10. While some less popular Ultra Rares fall into a modest price range of a few dollars, the top-tier "Chase" Ultra Rares are heavily traded commodities that serve as both deck enhancements and long-term collectible investments.
