Special Illustration Rare (SIR)
Definition
The Special Illustration Rare (SIR), sometimes referred to as Special Art Rare (SAR) in Japanese sets, is the pinnacle of the standard Pokémon Trading Card Game rarity hierarchy in the Scarlet & Violet era. Identified by two gold stars at the bottom of the card, SIRs are the ultimate combination of premium gameplay and breathtaking artistry.
An SIR is essentially the upgraded, high-end version of an Illustration Rare (IR). While IRs feature standard Pokémon, SIRs are exclusively reserved for the most powerful cards in the set: Pokémon ex, legendary Pokémon, and crucial Supporter characters. Like IRs, they feature stunning, edge-to-edge full-card illustrations that showcase unique art styles and tell a story. However, what sets an SIR apart is its premium physical treatment. SIR cards feature intricate, highly detailed foil texturing across the entire surface of the card. This texture often outlines the characters, the background elements, and the text itself, creating a luxurious tactile experience that cannot be replicated digitally. They are the crown jewels of any modern booster pack, functioning both as Meta-defining game pieces and top-tier collector items.
Market Context
In the modern Pokémon TCG economy, Special Illustration Rares are the undisputed "Chase Cards." They are the primary reason many collectors and players buy booster boxes, and their pull rates are notoriously difficult.
Because of their extreme scarcity, stunning artwork, and competitive viability, SIRs command the highest prices on the secondary market. If an SIR features a popular Pokémon (like Charizard or Mew) or a highly playable "Waifu" Supporter card (like Iono), its price can instantly skyrocket into the hundreds of dollars upon release. On platforms like Ntar, the buying, selling, and trading of SIRs form the backbone of the high-end singles market. Collectors obsess over the condition of these cards, frequently grading them into "Slabs" (PSA/CGC 10) to exponentially multiply their value. An SIR is not just a playing card; it is a premium collectible asset. In the competitive scene, players who bring decks fully "blinged out" with SIRs are often flexing significant financial investment, as securing playsets of these elusive cards requires either immense luck with "Pulls" or deep pockets in the secondary market.
