Reversi (Reverse Holo)

Definition

Reversi, commonly known as a Reverse Holo in the broader English-speaking Trading Card Game (TCG) community, is a specific foil treatment applied to standard cards in the Pokémon TCG. The term "Reversi" is frequently used in the Indonesian community to describe this unique, shiny variant.

Unlike a traditional Holographic Rare card, where only the character illustration inside the artwork box features a shiny foil pattern, a Reverse Holo flips this concept. On a Reverse Holo card, the character artwork remains matte and non-shiny, while the rest of the card—the background, the borders, and the text box area—is covered in a reflective foil treatment. Every standard set in the Pokémon TCG features a Reverse Holo variant for nearly every Common, Uncommon, and standard Rare card in the expansion. Because every modern booster pack guarantees at least one Reverse Holo card, they are widely accessible. They offer players and collectors an opportunity to acquire a slightly more premium, visually appealing version of otherwise standard game pieces.

Market Context

The market for Reverse Holo cards occupies a unique niche, bridging the gap between bulk collecting and high-end competitive "bling."

For casual collectors trying to complete a "Master Set" (which requires owning both the standard and Reverse Holo version of every card in an expansion), Reversis are essential, prompting active trading and selling of these variants on platforms like Ntar. Financially, most modern Reverse Holos are considered "foil bulk" and hold very little individual value, often priced just slightly higher than their non-holo counterparts. However, there is a strong secondary market for Reverse Holo versions of highly playable, Meta-defining Common and Uncommon Trainer cards. Competitive players who want to fully upgrade their decks will specifically hunt down Reversi versions of their staple Items and Supporters. Consequently, a Reverse Holo of a highly played card can command a premium of several dollars, while the non-holo version remains pennies. Additionally, vintage Reverse Holos—such as those from the legendary "Legendary Collection" set—are incredibly rare and stand as some of the most expensive and sought-after collectibles in the entire hobby.
