Rekber (Rekening Bersama)
Definition
In the Indonesian Trading Card Game (TCG) community, Rekber—short for Rekening Bersama (Joint Account)—is an essential transaction method utilized to ensure safety and trust between buyers and sellers who conduct business online. Functionally, Rekber acts as an escrow service.
When a buyer purchases a card or a sealed product from a seller via social media (such as Facebook groups or WhatsApp), they do not send the money directly to the seller's personal bank account. Instead, the funds are transferred to a trusted, neutral third party—the Rekber administrator or platform. The Rekber holds these funds securely while the seller packs and ships the item. The seller is only authorized to receive the money from the Rekber once the buyer receives the package, inspects the cards to ensure they match the described condition (e.g., checking if a "Raw" card is truly Near Mint), and confirms the transaction is complete. If the card is damaged, fake, or lost in transit, the Rekber can freeze the funds and mediate a refund, protecting the buyer from scams and the seller from false claims.
Market Context
The TCG secondary market is inherently risky, as it involves the exchange of high-value cardboard assets—such as a million-rupiah "Chase Card" or an expensive "Slab"—based entirely on photos provided over the internet. Consequently, Rekber is not just a convenience; it is the backbone of the localized TCG economy in Indonesia.
Without Rekber, the risk of "hit and run" scams (where a seller takes the money and blocks the buyer) would collapse the trust required to sustain the hobby. Platforms like Ntar are designed to institutionalize and streamline this exact concept, providing an automated "Ntar Escrow" system that eliminates the need to rely on individual, human Rekber administrators in Facebook groups. By using a secure Rekber platform, buyers can confidently purchase expensive Meta staples or rare vintage collectibles from strangers across the country. The small administrative fee usually charged by Rekber services is universally accepted by the community as the necessary "insurance" cost for participating in the vibrant, nationwide secondary market.
