Raw

Definition

In the Trading Card Game (TCG) hobby, a "Raw" card refers to a trading card that is in its original, unencapsulated state. Specifically, it means the card has not been submitted to a third-party grading company (such as PSA, CGC, or BGS) to be authenticated, scored, and sealed within a hard plastic "Slab."

A Raw card is essentially a card exactly as it is pulled from a booster pack or kept in a standard protective sleeve or binder. It can be held directly by the player, easily swapped between different protective sleeves, and actively utilized in a physical deck for gameplay. The term is heavily utilized in buying, selling, and trading discussions to immediately clarify that the card is not graded. Because a Raw card lacks an objective, professional evaluation of its condition, buyers and sellers must rely on their own visual inspections—often facilitated by high-resolution photographs showing the card's corners, edges, and surfaces—to determine if it is Near Mint, Lightly Played, or Damaged.

Market Context

The market for Raw cards is the largest and most active sector of the TCG economy. It serves two entirely different demographics: the competitive players and the "Slab" hunters.

For competitive players, the Raw market is essential. Players cannot use Slabs in official tournaments because the thick plastic casings make shuffling impossible and mark the cards. Therefore, the market for playable Meta staples, like Double Rares or ACE SPECs, operates almost exclusively in Raw condition. On platforms like Ntar, high volumes of Raw singles are traded daily to facilitate deck building.

Conversely, for investors and collectors, buying expensive Raw cards is a game of high-risk, high-reward speculation. Collectors hunt for "Mint" condition Raw Chase Cards, hoping to buy them at the standard Raw market price, submit them to a grading company, and receive a coveted PSA 10 grade, which drastically increases the card's value. However, purchasing high-end Raw cards online carries the risk of hidden flaws (like subtle scratches or print lines) that a seller might not disclose, making trusted escrow services like "Rekber" vital for protecting buyers in the Raw singles market.
