Mythic Rare in Magic: The Gathering
What is a Mythic Rare?
In Magic: The Gathering (MTG), the Mythic Rare is the highest baseline rarity classification found in standard booster packs. Introduced in 2008 with the Shards of Alara expansion, Mythic Rares were designed to represent cards that feel truly epic, legendary, or game-altering. You can identify a Mythic Rare by its expansion symbol, which is colored in a distinct vibrant orange-red.
In a standard play booster or draft booster, a Mythic Rare typically replaces the standard Rare card in approximately 1 out of every 7 or 8 packs. The cards chosen to be Mythic Rares usually include legendary creatures, powerful Planeswalkers, epic spells with massive effects, and central characters to the set's storyline. In gameplay, Mythic Rares are often designed to be "bombs"—cards that are incredibly powerful in limited formats (like Draft or Sealed) and serve as the win conditions or engine centerpieces in constructed formats like Standard, Modern, and Commander.
Market Context and Trading Value
The introduction of Mythic Rares permanently altered the MTG secondary market. Because they are significantly harder to pull than standard Rares, they act as the primary financial drivers for any new set release.
Pricing and Meta Dependency: The value of a Mythic Rare is intensely tied to its competitive viability across various formats. A Mythic Rare that dominates the Standard format or becomes a staple in Modern can easily command prices ranging from $30 to $80+. However, MTG is unique in its massive casual player base, primarily driven by the Commander (EDH) format. If a Mythic Rare is a popular new Commander or a potent addition to the 99-card deck, its price will remain high and stable due to sheer casual demand. Conversely, "bulk Mythics"—cards with narrow uses or high mana costs that see no competitive play—can drop to as low as $1 to $3.
Variants and the "Bling" Factor: In modern MTG, pulling a standard Mythic Rare is only the beginning. Wizards of the Coast (the publisher) frequently prints Mythic Rares in premium treatments, including Foil, Borderless, Showcase frames, and Retro frames. A highly playable Mythic Rare in a special Borderless Foil treatment will command a massive premium over its base version, appealing to players who want to "bling out" their decks.
Trading Liquidity: Highly playable Mythic Rares are incredibly liquid assets. They are traded constantly in Local Game Stores (LGS) and on online marketplaces. Because of their higher value, players frequently utilize Escrow or Rekber services to ensure safe transactions when buying or trading high-end Mythics, particularly older ones from out-of-print sets.
