Escrow (Rekber) in TCG Trading

What is Escrow (Rekber)?

In the trading card community, an Escrow service—widely known in Indonesia as Rekber (short for Rekening Bersama or "Joint Account")—is a secure financial arrangement designed to protect both the buyer and the seller during an online transaction. Because trading cards can easily cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, trading directly with strangers online carries a massive risk of scams, non-delivery, or condition misrepresentation.

When utilizing an Escrow or Rekber service, the transaction follows a secure, neutral pathway. The buyer does not send their money directly to the seller. Instead, the buyer deposits the funds into a secure, third-party account managed by the Escrow platform or a trusted community admin. Once the funds are confirmed, the seller is notified to ship the card. After the buyer receives the package, inspects the card for authenticity, and confirms that the condition matches the description, they notify the Escrow service. Only then are the funds released to the seller. If there is a dispute (e.g., the card is fake, heavily damaged, or never arrives), the Escrow service acts as a mediator, holding the funds until the issue is resolved, or refunding the buyer.

Market Context and Trading Value

The use of Escrow/Rekber services has become the gold standard for high-value TCG transactions, drastically changing the landscape of the secondary market.

Preventing Scams: Before the widespread adoption of Rekber, the TCG community was plagued by "runaway" scams, where a buyer would wire money and the seller would simply disappear. Escrow eliminates this risk entirely. It also protects sellers from fraudulent chargebacks, as the funds are secured by the neutral third party before the item is shipped.

Condition Verification: In a market where the difference between Near Mint (NM) and Lightly Played (LP) can mean a difference of hundreds of dollars, the inspection period provided by Escrow is invaluable. It forces sellers to be completely honest about card conditions, knowing that the buyer has the right to refuse the release of funds if the card arrives with undisclosed damage.

Building Market Trust: For a healthy, liquid TCG economy, trust is essential. Platforms that integrate built-in Escrow systems see significantly higher trading volumes, especially for high-end "chase cards" like Alternate Arts, Manga Rares, and Serialized cards. While Escrow services typically charge a small administrative fee, serious collectors and players consider it a mandatory insurance cost to secure their high-value investments in the trading card ecosystem.
